4-H Library Adventures—a Special Partnership

Many times young people use library facilities as a safe haven for after school time.  With the many unique resources which libraries have available, there are exciting opportunities to offer these young people some engaging, hands-on learning activities through 4-H.  The information provided below provides some resources to help children’s and teen librarians offer a new dimension of “learn by doing” explorations on a variety of topics.  This “library tool kit” includes:

Keys for Leaders #1 – What is 4-H Youth Development? What Makes it Different from Other Youth Programs? (a brief overview of the Extension 4-H approach to positive youth development).

After School Program Ideas --- Cuyahoga County 4-H (a short menu of just some of the many “learn by doing” curriculum packages 4-H can offer groups for use with various ages of young people).

Keys for Leaders #2 – Getting Started (things to keep in mind when starting up a youth group or club);

Keys for Leaders #6 – Ages and Stages of Youth Development (a quick overview of things to keep in mind when developing activities for various ages of youth).

Are We Puzzling to You? --- templates for a training activity to help youth development staff and volunteers understand developmental differences in different ages of youth.  Call Dina Allen , 4-H Secretary, 216-429-8218 for the puzzle templates.

Building Programs that Build Youth Assets – a “PowerPoint” presentation that covers basic ideas of positive youth development and the “asset building” approach to working with youth in a variety of settings.

Keys for Leaders #8 --- Developing Assets in and Around Young People -- (background info on "asset model" for positive youth development which many youth workers incorporate into their program plans).

Youth Voices --- a sample teen newsletter developed from focus group session on “Community Building” held as part of a program with a Cleveland branch library.

Career Quest Challenge! --- a sample flyer from a contest related to career planning activities conducted with a branch of the Cuyahoga County Public Library, along with the Career Action Plan which the youth were encouraged to complete along with help from the librarian. Click HERE for the sample contest flyer.  Click HERE for the Building Your Career Action Plan.
